Shield of Faith… Armor of God

The shield that Paul had in mind here is not the small, round buckler, but the oblong, door-like shield, measuring 4′ x 2 ‘, curved to the shape of the body and carried by the Greek and Roman soldiers. When joined together, these large shields formed a wall behind which a body of troops could hide themselves from the rain of the enemy’s missiles.

After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”
Genesis 15:1

These military shields were made of wood, covered on the out- side with thick leather, which not only deadened the shock of the missile, but protected the frame of the shield from the fire-tipped darts used in the artillery of the ancients.

O Israel, trust in the LORD;
He is their help and their shield.
O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD;
He is their help and their shield.
You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD;
He is their help and their shield.
Psalm 115:9-11

Roman soldiers definitely used flaming missiles to destroy their enemies, but they were much more subtle appearing, and more deadly. The “fiery darts” we read about in this passage were made from a hollow reed. One end was plugged then the reed was filled with a flammable liquid, a mixture of alcohol and naphtha for instance. A loosely fitting stopper holding an ignited wick was slipped into the other end of the tube and lit.

For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
The LORD will give grace and glory;
No good thing will He withhold
From those who walk uprightly.
Psalm 84:11

It was then shot like an arrow, not at a flammable target but at the soldier himself. Since the dart had it’s own fuel source and the wick was protected by the tube, the missile kept burning until it hit its target. When it hit a soldier, the wick popped out, the liquid spilled over the soldier’ s armor and ignited, cooking him in his own armor.

Every word of God is pure;
He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.
Proverbs 30:

So now we know what a fiery dart is in the physical realm but what spiritual reality was Paul illustrating here. While he doesn’t say exactly what fiery darts are he does tell us they can be defeated by faith. This shows us that these darts are weapons that produce the opposite of faith, unbelief….

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6

To cause us to reach a state of unbelief in God. or in his Word or in his promises doesnt take but a few well placed fiery darts… These darts can take many forms… but they all use lies, half truths, deceptions or some false mirrored image of the truth…

Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does. James 1:23-25

Let me give you an example…. During the Jericho March…. We had tremendous blessing occur in and out of our KTFM Family… The boss of one of our admins wife called, apologizing stating that her raise had been passed over and the next day they had a check making up for the last six months without the raise… Another Admin had several checks appear for his business on accounts that were 180+ days old…. Yet… even though I was co-leading the March.. and I had debts owed to me…. they were not forthcoming….

By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the people had marched around them for seven days. Hebrews 11:30

As the March came to an end…. While I rejoiced with my Brothers… and I praised God for all the blessings he had brought forth as a result of the March… there was that small voice… that tiny thought that starting to grow… HEY WHAT ABOUT ME?…. Had God truly foresaken me?…. Was I going to allow the evidence found in the Word of who GOD is… was I going to allow my own experiences of How GOD provides for me.. to be washed away?… NO…. I stood by my FAITH.. and I quickly rebuked those thoughts in the name of Christ…..

casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,…. 2 Corinthians 10:5

So exactly what is FAITH?… Faith is trusting that God is who the Word says he is… Faith is trusting God will fulfill the promises made in the Word…. Faith is “being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see…” Faith is knowing that Jesus Christ died for your sins… Faith is knowing that God will never abandon you… Faith is knowing the God will always provide for you… Faith is a way of life… and for me and mine it is the only way to live….

The head of Ephraim is Samaria,
and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son.
If you do not stand firm in your faith,
you will not stand at all
Isaiah 7:9

Now the hard part… How does one get FAITH?…. Look back into your life experience… Recall the times that God has provided for you… Recall the times when He has blessed you…. Can you doubt Your own life experience?…. So you have no life experience to fall back on?…. Then Romans 10:17 tells you …”So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

As you continue your walk with the Lord …. Spend additional time in the Word…. Keep memorizing the list, I gave you on Wed, of who you are in Christ…. and build your faith… write down every time that you have received supernatural favor, every instance of His provision, and all the blessings from God that you can remember…. Thank Him for each and every one of them….

We live by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7

Remember… God is not moved by your tears… God is not moved by your circumstances… God is not moved by your moaning and complaining… GOD IS MOVE BY YOUR FAITH…. Pray with me the following prayer….

Pappa, I choose to take up the shield of faith. I want to thank You that, no matter how many fiery arrows the enemy hurls at me today, no matter how many trials or temptations may come, I can stand safely behind the shield of faith. Help me realize that Faith is a mighty force; it is our faith that makes the difference between success and failure, between victory and bitter defeat. I rebuke the spirits of unbelief and of doubt… I choose to walk in the faith of Your love… of Your provision… of Your promises.. and of my salvation through Jesus Christ… Amen…
